Buying White Hydrangea
The best place to buy white hydrangea is from a fresh flower wholesaler because
you will want the freshest blooms available and the best possible price. The price will be
important as white hydrangeas are one of the most expensive cut flowers on the market. Always
discuss your requirements with your wholesaler first because white hydrangea is available in
different stem lengths and grades. (Stem lengths typically on offer are 30cm, 40cm, 50cm, 60cm,
70cm and 80cm). By rule of thumb, the longer the stem, the larger the bloom and better the grade.
Always let your flower wholesaler know what time of the year you require your white hydrangea as
they are not available all year round like other flowers.
White hydrangea are sold in wholesale wraps of 10 stems. Always be aware that
wholesalers will quote prices excluding VAT, (now 17½% but rising to 20% in January 2011). Also ask
your cut flower wholesaler for specialist hydrangea food, as it is different from general cut
flower food.
The best quality white hydrangea is grown under glass in Holland - this is
exactly what you need to be buying. Some wholesalers may offer cheaper white hydrangea - this will
almost definately be grown in Colombia. It will be smaller, 'dirtier' in it's appearance and
generally looks tired - Make sure you are buying Dutch grown white hydrangea every time!
